Oral Health_Recovering from tooth loss

Root canals and dental implants are equally successful, but implants may need more follow-up maintenance, a new study shows.

Dental implants replace tooth roots. A root canal is a procedure designed to save an infected or decayed tooth.

Dental implants and root canals had similar success rates, meaning that the teeth in question were still in the mouth and hadn't rotated or needed further correction. Those success rates were 98% to 99%.

When the researchers also considered teeth with "uncertain" results -- meaning that the teeth had shifted a bit but didn't need to be removed after root canal or dental implants -- both procedures shaved off about 10% points from their success rate, a similar decline for each procedure.

Tooth Loss from Trauma

"When an irresistible force meets the immovable object, something gives," Price says. Trauma might be anything from getting hit by a baseball to biting on a frozen candy bar.

Your teeth are great tools. But not for things like:

  • Removing caps, tops, or lids
  • Cracking ice cubes, nut shells, or popcorn kernels
  • Chewing on pencils or pens
  • Holding clothes hangers
  • Loosening knots or tearing off tags
  • Cutting thread

Clenching and grinding - often done in response to stress -- can also put too much stress on your teeth. It can also mean a bite is unbalanced, Price says. Both deserve your attention.

Poor oral hygiene and lack of professional care are big contributors.

Other factors that put you at greater risk for periodontal disease and potential tooth loss include:

  • Smoking
  • Poor nutrition
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Arthritis

Changing hormones during pregnancy can also affect a woman's response to disease. So it's especially important to get regular professional care throughout pregnancy.

People with developmental and other disabilities are at greater risk as well, due to the challenges of home care. This means caregivers need to be creative about helping with this task.

Early onset of periodontal disease is another concern. "If I see a patient under 40 with periodontal disease, that's worrisome to me because I know this person will be particularly susceptible,"

What Causes Pericoronitis?

Pericoronitis can develop when wisdom teeth only partially erupt (break through the gum). This allows an opening for bacteria to enter around the tooth and cause an infection. In cases of pericoronitis, food or plaque (a bacterial film that remains on teeth after eating) may get caught underneath a flap of gum around the tooth. If it remains there, it can irritate the gum and lead to pericoronitis. If the pericoronitis is severe, the swelling and infection may extend beyond the jaw to the cheeks and neck.

What Are the Symptoms of Pericoronitis?

Symptoms of pericoronitis can include:

  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Swelling in the gum tissue (caused by an accumulation of fluid)
  • A "bad taste" in the mouth (caused by pus leaking from the gums)
  • Swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck
  • Difficulty opening the mouth

Dental implants can improve the structure of your teeth.

They allow you to have the smile that you have always dreamed of and improved oral health.

An implant is an artificial dental root made from Titanium. The implant is implanted into the jaw through a surgical operation and which keeps the artificial tooth. Also there are numerous benefits, for example, people with a broken tooth can avoid the unpleasant feeling of wearing false dentures.
